Not Now

Privacy

Short version: the app never goes online, and this website keeps no record of you.

The app

Not Now has no network code. It does not send, receive or collect any data about you or your usage. Your list of sites and schedules lies in a file on your own Mac (~/Library/Application Support/Not Now/config.json). A log file next to it records when Not Now blocked sites and opened them again, so you can see what it did. Neither ever leaves your Mac.

To block sites, Not Now writes their addresses into the hosts file of your Mac (/etc/hosts), between its own markers. For that it sets up a helper once, with your administrator password. You can remove the helper and its lines at any time in Settings, General, “Remove Helper…”.

While sites are blocked, Not Now looks at the address of the tab in front in Safari, Chrome, Arc, Brave, Edge and Vivaldi, and once, when blocking starts, at the addresses of all open tabs. It does this only with your permission, which macOS asks for once per browser and which you can withdraw in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Automation. The addresses are compared with your list on your Mac. A tab on a blocked site gets Not Now’s page, served by the app on your Mac. Nothing is stored or sent; the app’s log notes only the blocked site.

To suggest sites, Not Now reads the browsing history files of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Arc, Brave, Edge and Vivaldi on your Mac when you open its Sites list, and counts the visits per site over the last 30 days. Mail, logins, work tools and search engines are left out. The counts stay in the app’s memory while it runs; they are not stored, not logged by name and not sent anywhere. macOS only allows this with Full Disk Access, which you switch on and off yourself in System Settings, Privacy & Security. You can switch the suggestions off in Settings, General.
