Psst / Works with
Works with the voice tools you already use
Psst does not transcribe anything and replaces nothing. It makes the room quiet for whichever tool is listening.
Short answer: Psst follows the microphone that macOS reports, not a list of apps. Any dictation app, AI voice mode or editor that records through macOS triggers it.
What the tools do with your audio by themselves
As described by each provider, read on 19 October 2026. Where nothing is documented, we say so.
| Tool | By itself | With Psst |
|---|---|---|
Claude Code /voice | Nothing documented about other audio. The docs advise reducing background noise if no speech is detected. | Other apps muted while you hold space |
| Wispr Flow | Can mute the whole output device while you dictate with Flow; on outputs without mute it sets the volume to 0. Off by default on the Mac. | Mutes per app, so a call stays audible; works for every tool, not only Flow |
| Superwhisper, MacWhisper, Spokenly | Not checked by us. | Other apps muted while they record |
| Apple Dictation | Lowers or mutes other audio on its own. | Psst also reacts; nothing changes for you |
| ChatGPT and Claude voice | Not documented. | Treated as a call: the AI stays audible, the rest is muted |

Looking for a Wispr Flow alternative?
Psst is not one. It does not transcribe. If you like how your dictation app writes but not what happens to your music while it listens, keep the app and add Psst. If you are choosing a dictation app, the comparisons on the first page of Google list a dozen; any of them works with Psst.
One rule for all of them
macOS reports, per process, whether it is recording from the microphone. That is the only signal Psst uses. It needs no plugin, no API key and no update when a new tool comes out.
Questions
Is Psst a dictation app?
No. Psst does not record, transcribe or store anything. It only mutes other apps while some app uses the microphone.
Can I use Psst together with Wispr Flow's own mute?
Yes. If both are on, Flow mutes the output device and Psst mutes the apps; when you stop, both restore. You may prefer to turn Flow's mute off so a call stays audible.
